Why I Teach
It may sound trite, but I have wanted to be a teacher since I was very young. My favorite activity as a kid was organizing my friends and siblings into group games and activities. As a teen I enjoyed learning about the natural world around me and sharing what I knew with other people. In college I found joy in working with students and realized I not only wanted to teach, but wanted to teach science.
As a teacher I find inspiration in watching my students develop an appreciation of science. Having them question, struggle for answers, and celebrate what was learned keeps me going. In a world where fake news and unsupported claims abound, I enjoy challenging my students to think for themselves and to develop their own theories backed by accurate evidence.
To summarize Dr. Kenneth Miller, the best time to teach science is right now. In an ever- changing world, science keeps us on our toes. Science presents evolving information to grapple with. Helping students to think methodically as they learn to explore the world around them fills my soul. I will never get bored as a science teacher.
